In 1946, Donald Clark (on the right in above photo) returned home from WWII, and with a fleet of six aircraft, he started Clark’s Spraying Service. In 1950, at age twenty, Joe Hudson purchased the company from Donald and expanded his operation at the Rehoboth Airport in Rehoboth, Delaware, which Joe owned. Joe grew the crop dusting business by broadening services, including spraying mosquitos for the State of Delaware.
As the company grew, David Chorman began to work for Joe to assist with maintaining the Stearman planes. David would take his son, Allen, to work with him, where Allen quickly developed his love for aviation. In 1956, at ten years old, Allen began working for Joe for 50 cents an hour. At that time Allen’s first job for Joe was picking up sticks at what is now the Eagle Crest Airport, located in Milton, Delaware. Nine years later, Allen began flying and spraying for Joe and would go on to become Joe’s protégé and life-long friend. In 1987, Joe sold the company to Allen, who renamed it Allen Chorman, Inc., and moved operations to the Chorman Airport in Greenwood, Delaware.
Allen’s son, Jeff, began flying when he was very young, and on his 16th birthday, he obtained his solo flying certificate. After graduating from Embry Riddle University in 2000, Jeff, following in his father’s footsteps, began flying full-time for the company. Allen Chorman and Son, Inc. continued to grow, and with Jeff’s vision, the company expanded operations into Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania and grew the fleet of aircraft to over twenty planes and two helicopters.
Allen retired from flying in 2021, and now Jeff manages all aspects of Chorman Spraying, LLC, which currently employs over thirty talented individuals. The Chorman team, comprised of pilots, ground crew, aviation mechanics, and office staff, keeps the current fleet aircraft flying at all ten main and five satellite airfields.
Using GPS and flow controlled equipped aircraft with sophisticated spray technology, Chorman Spraying provides complete aerial application service to farmers and each state across the Delmarva region. Services include crop and mosquito spraying, fertilizer application, cover crop seeding, as well as forestry services, marsh application, aerial observation, surveys, and FAA Part 135 charter service.
